Hailing from the Realm of Vanaheim, originally, the Vanir have a long past with the Aesir. They had long, arduous wars against one another, resulting in hostage taking and hostility on both sides. Odin's wife, Frigg, was a Vanir. When the day of Ragnarök came, a truce was called between the two races and there has been peace ever since. The Vanir are represented by the Queen of Asgard, Beata, wife of the King, who is herself a Vanir.
Like Aesir, Vanir are similar to humans at first glance but have the blessing of Yggdrasil. As a result, they have a better strength, constitution, and control of their senses. Particularly powerful Vanir have additional gifts, abilities that pegged them as gods to mortal creatures. Unlike Aesir, whose abilities are primarily used in battle, Vanir tend to have quieter and more subtle gifts.
Vanir-Aesir children aren't common, but are always much more powerful than the two races of their parentage (most of Odin's sons, for example). There is no official name for them, but some call them Vanær. |
